Barbatuques

Period of Coming Tour: Aug, 2020

Making music using our bodies, this is what really matter for Barbatuques!

Stablished in 1995, the music group from São Paulo has developed throughout its career a unique approach to body music through their compositions, techniques, exploration of timbres and creative procedures.

Through research and creation from Fernando Barba, who also had a good contact with the musician Stênio Mendes, Barbatuques developed different techniques of body percussion, vocal percussion, tap dance and musical improvisation in their collective experiences, which also incorporated each member’s experience.

Its innovative way of making music and the numerous possibilities of extracting sounds from the body made the group recognized and active both in artistic and educational environment, and resulted in the creation of musical shows, albums, trainings and workshops, which have been shown in more than 20 countries around the world. Barbatuques’ trajectory contributed significantly to body music that became widespread worldwide as a contemporary aesthetic and an important educational tool.

With 15 members, Barbatuques travels around Brazil and abroad with a regular schedule of concerts and workshops in companies, schools, cultural foundations, educational institutions and big events. The group has three released CDs: the latest to children “Tum Pá” (2012), and “Corpo do Som” (2002) and “O Seguinte É Esse” (2005); the DVD “Corpo do Som ao Vivo”(2007) and “Tum Pá ao Vivo” (to be released in the second half of 2014). Throughout its career, Barbatuques was awarded the prize as “TIM Brazilian Music Award” as best group of MPB – Brazilian Popular Music (2006).

Among the most important events and international tours, the highlights are: the participation as a headline talent in the closing ceremony of the Olimpic Games in Rio (2016); the participation in the World Cup in Africa (2010) and the official FIFA event in Johannesburg for the announcement of the 2014 World Cup; presence in the six previous editions of the International Body Music Festival (USA, Brazil and Turkey); the participation in fairs and exhibitions, such as the Frankfurt Book Fair (2013) and ExpoShangai (China – 2010); presentations at major festivals like Europalia Festival (Belgium – 2011), Paleo Festival and Ella Fitzgerald Festival in Geneva (Switzerland – 2008), Nyon Festival (France – 2008), Lollapalooza Festival – Brazil (2014), as well as shows in Spain, Lebanon, USA, among others.

The group also participated in performances and recordings with artists such as Bobby McFerrin (USA), Camille (FRA), Çudamani (Indonesia), Keith Terry (USA), One Giant Leap (UK), Stênio Mendes (BRA), Badi Assad (BRA), MarkuRibas (BRA), Chico Cesar (BRA), Naná Vasconcelos (BRA), Robertinho Silva (BRA), Djalma Corrêa (BRA), among others.

Among the most recent works, we can highlight the participation in the soundtrack of the movie Rio 2 (2014 – Fox Film/Blue Sky), both in the score as two original compositions: “Beautiful Creatures”, played along with Andy Garcia and Rita Moreno, and “Don’t Go Away”, played by Anne Hathaway and Flávia Maia.

In the same period, the group also participated in the soundtrack of the award-winning film “O Menino e o Mundo”, from the director Alê Abreu, along with Naná Vasconcelos and Emicida, and worked in the coordination and preparation of all Globo Television cast for the video-clip “Um Novo Tempo”, the traditional message for the end of the year from this TV channel. Moreover, Barbatuques is on the soundtrack of Educação.doc (2014), a documentary by Lais Bodansky and Luiz Bolognesi, which highlights innovative projects within the management in the public elementary school.

The technique developed by Barbatuques is being increasingly used in Brazilian schools – either private or public – and gains strength among educators for its ease of implementation, simplicity and low cost to institutions. The activities proposed by the group develop creativity, coordination and psychomotor perception of self and other.

The Barbatuques Nucleo is constantly in artistic and pedagogical research, and currently invests in new educational publications and new shows.
